Tetanus
A serious infection caused by bacteria entering through wounds.

Tetanus is caused by bacteria found in soil, dust and animal waste that enter the body through cuts, wounds or an unclean umbilical cord. The toxin they release causes painful muscle stiffness and severe spasms. Newborns can develop tetanus through an unclean cord, which is why maternal and infant protection is part of every routine schedule.
Symptoms
- Stiffness in the jaw (lockjaw), often the first sign
- Difficulty swallowing
- Painful muscle spasms, especially in the neck, back and abdomen
- Stiffness and rigidity spreading across the body
How it spreads
Not spread person-to-person. Bacteria enter through cuts, wounds, burns, or an unclean umbilical cord in newborns.
Why it's serious
Tetanus is serious and potentially fatal, but is entirely preventable with vaccination. The vaccine is very safe and effective.
- Breathing difficulty during severe muscle spasms
- Broken bones from violent muscle contractions
- Death in severe cases, particularly in newborns without treatment
Most at risk: Unvaccinated individuals of any age with wounds. Newborns delivered in unsanitary conditions (neonatal tetanus) are at very high risk.

Treatment requires hospitalisation and includes wound care, antitoxin, muscle relaxants and respiratory support. Recovery is slow. Prevention through vaccination is far preferable.
