Chrome Web Store

Best for: Chrome extensions and browser products. The developer account email cannot be changed after the account is created, which is why Google suggests a separate one.

Before you submit

Create a dedicated email account for publishing before you register.

Prepare the package, screenshots, privacy disclosures and reviewer notes, and allow time for review.

How to launch on Chrome Web Store, step by step

The Chrome Web Store is where Chrome extensions are listed. You register a developer account, upload the extension, and it is reviewed before publishing; most reviews finish within a few days.

  1. Register with a dedicated email

The developer account email cannot be changed later, so Google suggests a separate account for publishing.

  2. Upload the package

In the Developer Dashboard choose Add new item and upload the zip file, up to 2 GB.

  3. Prepare the images

You need a 128 by 128 icon (with the artwork at 96 by 96), at least one and up to five screenshots at 1280 by 800 or 640 by 400, and a 440 by 280 small promo tile. A 1400 by 560 marquee image is optional.

  4. Fill in the Privacy tab

Declare the extension's single purpose and how it handles user data. On the Distribution tab, choose whether it is paid, which countries list it and who can see it.

  5. Choose when to publish

If you untick automatic publishing, you get up to 30 days after approval to publish it yourself, which lets you line the release up with a launch date.

Chrome Web Store's own rules

  • Review takes longer for new developers, new extensions, broad host permissions such as <all_urls>, sensitive permissions and large or obfuscated code.
  • A rejected submission gets an email explaining the violation and how to appeal; the published listing is left unchanged.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Requesting permissions the extension does not need, which slows review.
  • Forgetting the required small promo tile.
