MenACWY
Protects against four groups of the bacteria that cause meningococcal meningitis.

The meningococcal conjugate vaccine protects against groups A, C, W and Y of Neisseria meningitidis, the bacterium behind meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia. Schedules place it differently: Australia gives it in the second year, the UK and US give it to teenagers, because carriage and group W and Y disease rise again in adolescence. Group B is not covered by this vaccine and needs the separate MenB vaccine.

How it's given
Injection in the thigh in infants and the upper arm in older children and teenagers.
Side effects & safety
Redness and soreness at the injection site are common. A mild fever or irritability can follow in younger children and passes in a day or two.
Most babies have little or no reaction. Any soreness or fever tends to be brief.
When to call your doctor: if fever exceeds 40°C, lasts more than 2 days, or your child seems unusually unwell.
