India runs two childhood vaccination schedules: the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), provided free by the Government of India, and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) schedule, followed widely in private practice.
Both schedules protect against the same core diseases, and both start with a dose at birth. The difference is mainly in which combination vaccines are used and how many optional vaccines are included. Where to get them, and what they cost
Every vaccine on the UIP schedule is free at government health facilities, including primary health centres, community health centres and government hospitals, and through Anganwadi and outreach sessions. Private clinics and hospitals charge per dose and typically follow the IAP schedule, which includes vaccines the government programme does not fund.

What makes the India schedule different
- Pentavalent or Hexavalent
- UIP uses the Pentavalent vaccine, which covers five diseases in one injection, with oral polio drops alongside. IAP commonly uses Hexavalent, which adds the injectable polio component, so your baby receives fewer separate injections at each visit for the same protection.
- BCG at birth
- India gives BCG in the first days of life because tuberculosis remains common and is most dangerous in the youngest children. Many high-income countries no longer vaccinate every newborn against TB, which is why an India schedule starts differently from a UK or US one.
- Both polio vaccines
- India uses oral polio drops and the injectable polio vaccine together. The drops spread immunity through the community; the injection gives reliable individual protection. This belt-and-braces approach is part of how India was certified polio-free.

Which schedule should I follow in India, UIP or IAP?
- Follow the one your clinic uses. UIP is the free government programme and covers every essential vaccine. IAP is the pediatric society schedule most private clinics follow, and it adds some optional vaccines and uses more combination products. Neither leaves your child unprotected against the core diseases.
Are vaccines really free in India?
- Every vaccine on the UIP schedule is free at government health facilities. There is no charge for the dose or the visit. Private clinics charge, which is what you are paying for if you follow the IAP schedule privately.
What if we missed the 6, 10 or 14 week doses?
- They can almost always be caught up rather than restarted. Enter the doses your child has already had in the calculator below and it works out the earliest valid date for each remaining one, using the minimum age and the minimum gap between doses.
Do I need a vaccination card for school admission in India?
- Many schools ask for an immunization record at admission. Keep the card your clinic or health centre gives you, and the printable schedule from this page is a useful backup record of what is due and when.
